Specialist Training Begins...Work Experience at the National Theatre

Today I started 3 weeks work experience in the ladies' cutting department of the costume workroom at the National Theatre. I arrived at 9am and was briefly introduced to the people in the workroom, but had barely arrived when I was set to work on one of the costumes! I was very pleased that they immediately trusted me with something professional that they were working on and tried my best to keep my work neat and clean. The production we are working on is called 'The Doctors Dilemma' by Bernard Shaw, and it starts previewing at the Lyttleton Theatre on 17th July. It is set in 1905 and the workroom are making all the costumes for the lead female character, Mrs Jennifer Dubedat, consisting of 4 costumes in total. The one I started working on today was a dark crimson satin evening gown with black beaded detail. I made some minor alterations and applied the fastenings, before starting work on the hem.

Poppers sewn onto placket and whip-stitching on hem

After finishing my first day I have already started to see how the costume workroom in a professional theatre is run, and I'm looking forward to the coming 3 weeks, although I have a suspicion it's going to fly by!
